WHAT IS JICAMA?

Jicama is a thick-skinned root vegetable. It looks like a light brown beet from the outside. Jicama has the appearance and feel of raw potato on the inside.

It is grown mainly in Mexico and Central America. Jicama is becoming more and more common in American and global cuisine, and as such, it has become relatively easy to find. Many grocery stores will carry jicama in the fresh produce section, particularly between fall and spring.

If you don't find it in a typical grocery store, try an organic food store or farmer's market.

IS JICAMA LOW IN CARBS?

Jicamas might be similar to a potato but it actually has far fewer carbs. There are only about 9 grams of carbohydrates in 100 grams of jicama.

If you love french fries but want to cut down on your carbs, better try this recipe!

DOES JICAMA TASTE LIKE POTATO?

Jicama has a white interior and a flavor similar to an apple, although not as sweet. The texture is still starchy, making it a fantastic potato substitute. In addition to that, jicamas are juicy and crunchy.

Jicamas are supposed to be peeled before consuming, unlike potatoes that you can eat with or without the skin.

This can also be eaten raw in a salad or just with salt. It can also be cooked in stews, soups, stir-fries or the best one yet, seasoned and fried.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF JICAMA

You won't believe how nutritious this root vegetable is. It is packed with nutrients and is a great source of fiber and vitamin C.

According to WebMD, because of the dietary fibers in jicamas, it is great to help boost heart health. Not only that, jicamas keep you hydrated, it contains 85% of water. Also, there are components in jicamas that avoid cell damage. Obtaining enough antioxidants from food has been linked to a lower risk for cancer, diabetes, heart disease and cognitive decline. For this jicama fries air fryer recipe, you're going to need a couple of seasonings which you can easily find at the grocery store. Here is a list of what you'll need:

  • Smoked Paprika
  • Garlic Powder
  • Salt
  • Olive Oil
  • Non-aerosol Olive Oil Spray

EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS NEEDED

Here are a few equipment and tools that will help you get the best results for this recipe.

HOW TO MAKE THIS JICAMA FRIES AIR FRYER RECIPE

It's time to cook this delicious side dish now that you've gathered all the things you need. For the best results, follow the steps below!

STEP ONE: PREPARE JICAMAS

Before anything else, make sure to wash and peel the jicamas. Then, slice them into batons. You can cut them into thicker strips as well. But, having them thinly cut makes them more crispy.

STEP TWO: BOIL JICAMAS

To be able to get that French fry feel, boil the jicamas for 10 minutes. You can skip this step if you want but boiling before cooking it in the air fryer can make a big difference to the texture.

After boiling, drain and put aside to cool for about 2 to 3 minutes.

STEP THREE: COMBINE INGREDIENTS

While the jicamas are boiling you can go ahead and start combining the seasonings — olive oil, salt, garlic powder, and smoked paprika in a large bowl.

Once the jicamas are ready, toss them together with the other ingredients until completely coated.

STEP FOUR: PREHEAT AIR FRYER

Preheat your air fryer to 400F, if your air fryer has a preheat option. If not, ignore this step.

STEP FIVE: COOK JICAMA FRIES

Spray air fryer basket with non-aerosol olive oil then place seasoned jicama fries in a single layer. You will have to do this in batches if you are using a small air fryer basket.

Overcrowding the basket will result in less crispy jicama fries and possibly uneven cooking.

Air fry at 400F for 10 minutes, shake basket every 3 minutes until the jicama fries are golden. Repeat for the remaining batch of fries.

STEP SIX: SERVE

Serve hot with some homemade Weight Watchers Ketchup. These fries go great with almost any main dish!

TIPS FOR BEST TASTING JICAMA FRIES

Here are a few things to remember to achieve that best taste:

  • Thinly cut jicamas are crispier!
  • To keep your jicama fresh store it unpeeled and uncovered in a cool dry place. (This can be stored up to 3 weeks)
  • If you have leftovers that are peeled and cut up, you can also store them in the fridge. But make sure to wrap the jicama tightly with a paper towel or inside a Tupperware before doing so.
