If you are looking for incredibly easy vegan pop tarts, look no further! This recipe is flavorful and delicious, and a whole lot better than the kind wrapped in foil.

Most pop tarts are not vegan that you find in the store! Sure, some of the unglazed ones may be, or you can buy specific vegan ones for a lot of money, but there is nothing more satisfying than making your own!

One things I love about making homemade pop tarts is that you can customize the flavor to your tastes!

I love a cherry or strawberry filling. Sometimes I have a hankering for blueberry. You can go crazy and add something such as my Kiwi Jam if you really want to play with the flavor pallette.

The best part about this recipe is that it uses super simple ingredients and there is no chilling of the dough necessary.

Many vegan pop tart recipes call for at least 45-120 minutes of chilling the dough. Personally, I don’t have time for that!

Instead, we use my very easy Vegan Pie Crust Recipe as a base to make this quick and easy.

My pie crust uses no sugar so these pop tarts are great for breakfast as there is minimal sugar involved. You can choose to not glaze them too for an even healthier pop tart.

Like me, I am sure you are all very busy and want easy flavorful vegan breakfast food without all of the fuss!

This is truly one of the best Vegan Recipes For Kids because what kid doesn’t want to eat a toaster pastry?

As I mentioned above, these are actually pretty healthy pop tarts so you won’t feel bad eating them for breakfast or a snack!

I do hope you enjoy making these easy vegan pop tarts as much as I enjoy eating them.

Why You Will Love Vegan Pop Tarts

  • They are so easy to make, no chilling required! A lot of recipes for homemade pop tarts require you to chill the dough for over an hour. Not this one! This recipe is incredibly easy and simple and uses my very easy vegan pie crust recipe as a base. This is the perfect recipe for new cooks who want to try something fun and different.
  • You control the sugar content. There is no sugar in my pie crust dough, so you control how much sweetener you want on this recipe. You can choose to add the glaze [of course I add it!] but you can leave it off if you want. You can also use healthy homemade jam or buy it from the store, the choice is yours.
  • Only a few simple ingredients. This recipe uses under 10 ingredients and you should have the majority of them around your house! Since these are pantry ingredients, you can make the vegan pop tarts whenever you feel a craving.

How To Make Vegan Pop Tarts

Making vegan pop tarts is incredibly easy with my simple recipe.

The first thing you are going to want to do is choose the flavor of your vegan pop tarts.

We can probably all agree that strawberry pop tarts are the best flavor, but everyone likes what they like and if you like something else, go ahead and give it a try.

You want to buy jam or jelly in the flavor you want your pop tarts to be. This will be the filling for it and something you obviously want to buy in advance.

If you want to make healthy pop tarts, make sure to look at the sugar content to ensure your jam or jelly isn’t overloaded with it!

Now it is time to make our pop tarts vegan.

You are going to want to start by making my very easy 4-Ingredient Pie Crust.

The process is incredibly simple and if you want gluten-free pop tarts, you can simply use gluten-free flour in the pie crust and you are golden and good to go!

In a large mixing bowl, add flour and salt. Using a measuring cup, add in oil and milk to the bowl of flour.

Using your clean hands, mix pie crust until a dough forms. Be careful not to overmix. When it is just formed, you are done. You want your crust for the pop tarts to be flaky, not tough!

Immediately transfer to your counter and split the dough into 2 balls.

Roll dough using a rolling pin with dough between two pieces of parchment or wax paper until you have a flat rectangular piece.

If you can’t get a rectangle, that is perfectly fine. Essentially, you will simply want to cut out about 4-5 small rectangles from each of the dough balls.

You should have between 8-10 small rectangles after you are done rolling out the dough and using your knife to cut the shapes.

Now, place 1-3 teaspoons of the jam or filling of your choice in the center of the rectangle and top it with another piece of crust.

If you want, you can add more filling, but make sure to leave an edge so that it doesn’t leak out. A little bit will go a long way.

Using a fork, crimp your edges all the way around to ensure that the filling of the vegan pop tarts doesn’t escape from the crust.

Transfer them to a lined cookie sheet and now it is time to brush them with my favorite vegan egg wash.

You can use a variety of things for vegan egg wash such as melted Vegan Butter, non-dairy milk, aquafaba and more. You can read more about my FAVORITE VEGAN EGG WASH here!

I have found the absolute best vegan egg wash to be to first brush your pastry with aquafaba (liquid from the chickpea can) and then brush over it again with a little non-dairy milk.

This combo makes for an incredibly brown and beautiful crust on this vegan pop tart recipe and is something that I use for many recipes.

Bake them on 400F for about 10-15 minutes until the bottoms are golden brown. Every oven is different so PLEASE keep an eye on them so you don’t overbake!

I would start checking them at 7 minutes but you may need to bake them as long as 20-25 minutes. Again, every oven is different but I usually find the 10-20 minute range to be the sweet spot!

Making The Pop Tart Glaze

While the vegan pop tarts are baking, it is time to make the glaze!

The glaze couldn’t be easier if it tried!

You simply mix vanilla, powdered sugar, and non-dairy milk together and pour it over your pop tarts (carefully!)

Now, if you want to flavor it, you mix a tiny bit of the jam or jelly that you are using for the filling into the glaze mixture! I recommend adding a little bit (1 teaspoon) and continuing to add more until your desired color is achieved.

f you want a thinner glaze, add more milk 1 teaspoon at a time. If you want a thicker glaze, add more powdered sugar. I like a thicker glaze that is just runny enough for me to drizzle.

Finally, you will want to let the vegan pop tarts cool for about 10 minutes or else the glaze will just melt into them!

Sprinkle with sprinkles or whatever toppings you want and enjoy!

Flavor Variations You Can Try

There are truly so many flavor variations you can try on your vegan pop tarts!

I leave things open for you, but this recipe just calls for your favorite jam or jelly. Strawberry or cherry are both classics and are super tasty and easy to make.

But! There are tons of options that you can work with if you want to play with the different flavors. Here are some of my favorites.

  • Peanut Butter Pop Tarts. You can add in 2 teaspoons of peanut butter and then whisk together a white sugar glaze for the top. Sprinkle on shavings of chocolate once you are done.
  • Chocolate Pop Tarts. Use your favorite vegan chocolate spread for the filling and then add a little of the spread to the glaze for an easy chocolate glaze. Top with chocolate sprinkles.
  • Apple Cinnamon Pop Tarts. Simply cut your apples into really teeny tiny pieces and toss them with sugar and cinnamon before filling your vegan pop tarts. Top them with the plain white glaze for a tasty treat.
  • Blueberry Pop Tarts. Use blueberry jam for your filling and whisk a little bit of the jam into the glaze for a fun colored topping.

As you can see, there are plenty of options for modifying your homemade pop tarts to your taste.

How To Store The Vegan Pop Tarts

This recipe makes a small batch of about 5 pop tarts, so I am not sure if there are going to be any left over!

But, if you need to store them, I recommend keeping them covered on the counter for the first 1-2 days.

Then, you can transfer them to the fridge in an airtight container for 3 more days.

You can freeze the vegan pop tarts and to do so, I would freeze them on a cookie sheet until they are solid, and then transfer them to an air-tight container.

Easy Vegan Pop Tarts Recipe (11)

These vegan pop tarts are flaky and delicious! My recipe for vegan pop tarts whip up quickly using ingredients you have around the house and can be customized to your taste preference. They can easily be gluten-free when you simply use gluten-free flour. Don't forget the glaze and sprinkles for an authentic taste.

Prep Time10 minutes

Cook Time15 minutes

Total Time25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Flour [Any Flour Works]
  • 1 Pinch Of Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Oil
  • 1/3 Cup Non-dairy Milk
  • Jelly Or Jam (I use strawberry)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons non-dairy milk
  • Sprinkles for garnish
  • Aquafaba + Non-Dairy milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400F and line cookie sheets with parchment paper
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add flour and salt. Using a measuring cup, add in oil and non-dairy milk to the bowl of flour.
  3. Using your clean hands, mix the crust until the dough forms. Be careful not to overmix. When it is just formed, you are done.
  4. On a floured surface, divide your dough into two balls. Roll each ball out and cut out 4-5 rectangles from each bit of dough. You should have between 8-10 small rectangles of dough. If you want, you can roll out one giant rectangle from one dough ball, but I find that working with smaller batches is easier.
  5. Next, spoon between 1-3 teaspoons of jelly or jam in the center of the bottom rectangle. You can add as much or as little jam as you want, making sure that it stays inside the edges so you can create a border. I love using strawberry jam to create a strawberry pop tart, the best flavor!
  6. Layer your top rectangle over the bottom rectangle with the jam on it and use a fork to crimp the edges all the way around.
  7. Now, brush it with your vegan egg wash. I found the best vegan egg wash to be to first brush your pastry with aquafaba (liquid from the chickpea can) and then brush over it again with non-dairy milk. This ensures that it browns lovely in the oven!
  8. Cook the vegan pop tarts for 10-20 minutes until golden brown on the bottom. I recommend to start checking in on them from around 7 minutes. Each and every oven is different so you may have to bake yours longer or shorter. Just keep an eye on it and take it out when the crust is golden brown.
  9. Allo the vegan pop tarts to cool completely (or at least for 10 minutes) before glazing them!
